| The Winter season here would usually be described
as from September to April, and fewer sports are played then than during
the summer months.
Badminton. Social Badminton is still played in the Main Hall of the Mechanics Institute from October through to the end of April, usually on a Thursday. See Notice Board in the Mechanics Institute Netball If you would like a game of Netball in the Winter months go to the Mechanics Institute Village Hall on Tuesday evenings from 8.00pm until 9.00pm. The multi-use games area of the Playing Field is used at the same times on Tuesdays in the Summer months. Don't worry - it's not too serious! Phil Ambler returned to the KM Club as manager in January 2008 with the team languishing near the bottom of the Premier League. After a nailbiting few months he steered them to safety before rebuilding the side in the close season. At the end of the 2008/09 campaign they finished a respectable position in the league and reached the Whitworth Cup Final at Harrogate Town. With more faces added the following year they took the league by storm at the end of 2009/10, winning the Harrogate Premier League for the first time and also adding the Senior Cup. Many congratulations were showered on the club for securing the league and cup double. At the end of February 2011 both Phil Ambler and assistant Glyn Tasker left the club due to family reasons. Phil Ambler stated that the club is in a fantastic position. There are three teams and everything is in place for someone else to come in and take the club forward. In the meantime Club Chairman, John Pickard will take over the running of the first team with Jordan Hunt who has been promoted from the second team. John Pickard praised Phil and Glyn for their efforts. A lot of thanks has to go to them. The club would like to attract more local interest with regard to playing, supporting and helping in the running of the club. They are always in need of sponsorship and are in urgent need of some off the field help as a lot of time and dedication is required. Local support on match days is much appreciated. Why not have a walk down one Saturday afternoon as it boosts players' morale to play in front of a large number of spectators. You might even enjoy it!
There are two full sized quality tables in the dedicated room at the Mechanics Institute Village Hall in Kirkby Malzeard. One table was re-covered and the other table cover was re-stretched in Summer 2005. This dedicated room had in the months of December 2003 and January 2004 a face lift in the way of a false ceiling and the table lighting being replaced by canopies. The work was able to go ahead due to two Grants, totally £1,583.00, underpinning the overall cost. Playing Members of the Billiards and Snooker Section are particularly delighted with their new look area. It is warmer, has better lighting, and is more welcoming. Membership to the Billiards & Snooker Section of the Mechanics Institute is open to all those aged 16 and over, and the Annual Membership automatically includes Membership of the Mechanics Institute Village Hall. Access is available by membership key, and the facility is open seven days a week from 8.00 am to 10.00 pm for social play. Several players take advantage of being able to play throughout the day all year, and particularly during the winter months the tables are kept busy every day. Snooker and Billiards are both played in the Markington & District Leagues during the winter. The Leagues have approximately 14 teams and extend from Middlesmoor to Masham.
