ST ANDREW'S MEMORIAL BOOK

Many of us may know that Mrs Margaret Crosfield has quietly and faithfully added the names of the departed in the book at the back of St Andrew's, Kirkby Malzeard. If you would like your own dear departed loved ones' names to be added please contact Mrs Crosfield, Tel 01765 658584. A donation to St Andrew's Church funds would be much appreciated for the additions to the book.

A BRIEF OUTLINE OF THE PROGRESS OF St ANDREW'S CHURCH ORGAN RESTORATION

Although still performing quite well the organ had needed repairs to bellows and actions, it was noisy and had suffered from a series of leaks leading to damage. After 100 years of service, apart from some attention in the 1930's it was seriously in need of thorough cleaning and a complete overhaul.

On 12th June 2006 Anthony Cooke, the Diocesan Organ Adviser, visited to make an appraisal of its needs and general quality. He deemed the organ to be an historic one. It was built in 1906 by the reputable builders Brindley and Foster in Sheffield. His advice was to make every effort to restore the organ and to keep it. There had been suggestions that it should possibly be replaced by an electronic one. The adviser recommended "Peter Wood and Son" as a reliable firm of organ builders and restorers.

The P.C.C obtained 5 quotations for the work and Peter Wood proved to be the best proposition. His quotation was adopted - the figure for a complete refurbishment and repair being £25,850 + VAT. An appeal was launched in March 2007 to raise funds. A series of letters was sent to local firms and persons who might give substantial donations. 37 Trust Funds were approached, and others later

We are now close to having the money required - £28,400, provided there are no hidden costs or price rises. We have run concerts and other fund raising events and, if necessary, if costs are higher, will meet them in a similar manner. Since St Andrew's Church is a Grade 1 listed building we can retrieve VAT. Consequently Peter Wood is prepared to begin work on 18th August 2008.With a view to preserving the organ a canopy was installed which will protect it from any further leak. A new blower was installed at the same time . These were paid for from earlier fund raising.

The P.C.C is very grateful to all who have contributed towards the Organ Fund, villagers, benefactors and Trust Funds alike and would like to thank them for their invaluable support. An Organ Recital is planned to celebrate the completion of work, which should be a few weeks before Christmas 2008. A short service of blessing and commemoration will also take place.

Any further donations would still be welcome to bridge the final gap and also to ensure that we have a small reserve to hold as a maintenance and insurance fund. We have come a long way and would like to finish the project properly.
