Old Postcards from Kirkby Malzeard

1936

To see a full size photo of Lord Halifax opening the rebuilt Mechanics Institute and new village hall in December 1936 please click on the image above. The people in the picture are, from the left, Dean Owen, Lord Halifax, Sir Fred Moore, Miss Crompton and Lady Moore. At the time of this visit to the village Lord Halifax was Leader of the House of Lords, and had been Viceroy of India. Curiously, the Mechanics Institute was originally opened in 1852 by the Marquis of Ripon, who was also a former Viceroy of India! Lord Halifax went on to become Foreign Secretary 1938 - 1940, and met both Hitler and Mussolini. He was a Yorkshire man, and had previously been MP for Ripon. He made several visits to Kirkby Malzeard around the turn of the century, but this was the last that I know of.

Thanks to Virginia Moore Bevan for allowing us to publish this photograph.
