Inbetween Mowbray House and Fountains Dairy on the Ripon Road, you will see a small wooden gate. This is the entrance to a sunken path that leads to St. Andrew's Churchyard. The path was dug out when the owners of Mowbray House, the Cathcarts (1875-1921), objected to being able to see the workers from Azerley taking a short cut to church. During the Second World War it was used as the air-raid shelter for the village, and even had electric lights fitted! We would like to add anecdotal history given by local residents, so if you have any interesting or amusing memories of life in this area please let us know! |
